Silver Arendschelling

A variety of the Schelling of Zwolle, Netherlands having on the reverse a Imperial crowned double eagle(Arend) and known as the Arendschelling. First struck in 1601 by Rudolf II and this coin issued by the city of Zwolle, capitol of the United province of Overijssel, Netherlands.

Obverse : Crowned Arms of Spain. Above crown eseutcheon of Zwolle (cross) intersecting Latin legend MONE·ARG·IMPERIA·CIVITA·ZWOL between two beaded circles. The abbreviated Latin expands to Moneta Argentea Imperialis civitatis Zwolae and translates as: "Silver Money of Imperial City of Zwolle".
Reverse : Crowned Imperial Eagle displayed and crowned. The crown intersecting the inner of the two bead circles between which RVDOL·II·DG·ELEC·RO·IMP· SEM·AVG. The abbreviated Latin expands to Rvdolphvs II Dei Gratia Electvs Romanvs Imperator semper Avgvstvs and translates as: "Rudolf II by the Grace of God elected Emperor of the Romans always Augustus".

This Arendschellings was found in Lanka. Codrington X§26 Schellings(vi) (eagle) lists Arendschellings from Zwolle Rudolf II (1576-1612), Matthias I (1612-1619) and of Kampen, Matthias

This ArendSchelling is about 20% under-weight which may be accounted for by ware during circulation and the obvious light shaving of the edge often seen in coins of this Era.

Rudolf II (July 18, 1552 - January 20, 1612) was Holy Roman Emperor (1576-1512). He was raised in his uncle's court in Spain and explains the Spanish Court of arms on this coin.

Rudolf II patronized the famous astronomers Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler, both attended his court. Tycho Brahe developed the Rudolfine tables (finished by Kepler, after Brahe's death), the first comprehensive table of data of the movements of the planets.

Zwolle is the capital city of the province of Overijssel, situated by the river Zwarte Water, which falls into the river IJssel. In 1230 the bishop of Utrecht granted Zwolle city rights.

The uncleaned VF condition coin was scanned at 600 dpi and displayed at 250 dpi.
It was obtained in 2012 May from a Lankan Dealer
