Medieval India - Jautra Lion
Chauhans of Ranthambhor. 1275 CE

A small dumpy silver coin with a lion standing left with front paw rasied as in the Sri Lankan Flag. Issued by Chauhans of Ranastanbhapura ( Ranthambhor) in 1275 CE of Billon unit.

Obverse : Lion standing left with rasised right paw, annulus in front, and tail double bent over back within a double dotted border.
Reverse : Stylized Nagari Text. JAI/TA SI DE/VA, sun and moon flanking the letter "VA".

This coin probably never circulated in Lanka. It is included in this collection because of the remarkable similarity to the Lion in the Sri Lankan Flag except for the sword.

The coin was scanned at 600 dpi and displayed at 300 dpi. It was won in 2004 May on eBay from a dealer in USA
