in Sinhala centered on top. All within a raised rim.

In 1971 a selection process for a cheaper alloy, patterns were struck in Nickel-Brass clad steel, Steel and Aluminium with word TRIAL in raised letters on Obv. Rretired officer T. M. U. Sallay of the Central Bank of Ceylon, confirmed them to be official Patterns.
The 1969 Mintage figure given above from Sallay is 7.5M and not 2.5M (need to reconfirm)
