Sambuddhatva Jayanti 2600

At the request of the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, a commemorative Nickel plated steel Rs10 circulation was issued by Central Bank of Sri Lanka with a Rs 1000/- sterling silver crown size frosted Proof NCLT; coin, to mark the 2600 SamBuddhatva Jayanti year.

Obverse : At center A 24 spoke DharmaChakra (wheel of doctrine) with a dot in every spoke. The anniversary 2600 in central circle. The anniversary සම්බුද්ධත්ව ජයන්තිය in Sinhala on top சம்புத்தத்வ ஜயந்தி in Thamil on left and SAMBUDDHATVA JAYANTI on right, within the upper part annulus The text යුඤ්ජථ බුදධසාසන in Sinhala on top யுன்ஜத்த புத்தசாசேன in Thamil on left YUNJATHA BUDDHASAASANE on right, within lower part annulus separated by two filled circles.. All within an annulus of petal design and a partly raised rim.
Reverse : The large numeral denomination 10 with රුපියල් දහයයි in Sinhala, and பத்து ரூபாய் in Thamil and TEN RUPEES below and issue year 2011 at the bottom flanked by ears of paddy on either side.. The country name ශ්‍රී ලංකා in Sinhala, centered on top, இலங்கை in Thamil on left and SRI LANKA on Right. All within circle of a geometric design along periphery with partly raised rim.

The Pali phrase Yunjatha BuddhaSaasane means a "A Society that acts Righteously on Buddhist Philosophy".

The Dharmachakra may have 8, 12, 16, 24 or 32 spokes representing different aspects of the Buddha's Wheel of Dharma. The 24 appears on the original Ashoka Lion Piller from Sarnath.

The Rs 10 coin was schedule to be issued to circulation in 2011 June, but was finally issued by CBSL on 2011 July 18th, after allowing time for the Buddha Sasana Ministry which proposed the coin to issue it first. This did not happen. The ministry had been annoyed that the Rs1000/- was not issued at their ceremony in Anuradhapura.

The coin was obtained from CBSL in 2011 July 18th and scanned at 600 dpi and the images are displayed at 254 dpi. Also displayed above are scans of Artwork sent to Royal Mint, included in CBSL Press release.
