A commemorative one rupee cupro-nickel coin was issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in 1997 July for circulation, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations International Children's Education Fund (UNICEF).

Obverse : The official 50th anniversary logo of the United Nations International Children's Education Fund at the center within a piain circle with acronym UNICEF on upper left quadrant with the period 1946-1996 below within circle. Below සංවත්සරය in Sinhala above smaller ஆண்டுநிறைவு in Thamil on left and with ANNIVERSARY on right. එක්සත් ජාතින්ගේ ළමා in Sinhala on upper right, ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சிறுவர் நிதியம் in Thamil on upper left. All within circle of dashes along periphery with raised rim.
Reverse : A traditional Sinhala design using the Pineapple motif. Value as big රුපියලයි in Sinhala, and smaller ஒரு ரூபாய் in Thamil, and ONE RUPEE below and year of issue 1996 is at the bottom. with traditional Sinhala Liyavela art on either side, and country name ශ්‍රී ලංකා in Sinhala, centered on top. All within circle of dashes along periphery with raised rim.

The cupro nickel coin has been minted to the existing standard Rs. 1/- in circulation and has identical reverse side.

The almost uncirculated commemorative coin was scaned at 300 dpi and the images are displayed at 254 dpi. An uncirculated coin needs to be obtained for collection.
