A commemorative one rupee cupro-nickel coin was issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in 1997 July for circulation, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations International Children's Education Fund.

Obverse : The official 50th anniversary logo of the United Nations International Children's Education Fund at the center. The acronym UNICEF to a side on top with the period 1946-1996 is depicted below. The word ANNIVERSARY appears in Sinhala, Tamil and English at the bottom centre of the coin. The words United Nations Children's Fund" in Sinhala and Tamil is on right and left side along the periphery.
Reverse : The value ONE RUPEE in Sinhala, Tamil and English with SRI LANKA in Sinhala at the apex. The year of issue 1996 is at the bottom.

The cupro nickel coin has been minted to the existing standard Rs. 1/- in circulation and has identical reverse side.

The almost uncirculated commemorative coin was scaned at 300dpi and the images are displayed at 250dpi. An uncirculated coin needs to be obtained for collection.
