R. J. Corbet was a well known and leading Ceylon planter. The token was issued for the Gongalla Kanda coffee estate in the Kotmale District which covered about 788 acres. Corbet served as a Member of the Legislative Council and was a Chairman of the Planters Association. On the 1st September 1877 he filed in the District Court at Colombo, the historical case of Corbet V The Ceylon Co., Ltd., for the recovery of Rs. 300,000 damages and to obtain a full and detailed account of the agency of the estates and to recover possession of the estates known as Menickwatte, Wanarajah, Kolapatama, Gongalla, Devon, Redigama and Ettrick Forest, the whole being of an aggregate value of Rs. 1,500,000, and costs. After 12 years litigation the final judgement was given in April 1888, in favour of the plaintiff with costs.
