George IV - cast Forgery Rix Dollar
A cast Forgery of 1821 silver Rix-Dollars.
Obverse : Within plain rim, Laureate head to left,
In margin GEORGIUS IV D:G:BRITANNIAR:REX F:D:
The Reverse : Within plain rim, elephant to left within wreath; above, in three lines CEYLON ONE RIX DOLLAR and below 1821
IMHO this is probably a contemporary forgery, since if it was a modern fake it would probably have been of silver of correct purity. It is 7.6% lighter and based on this weight it is probably 37% silver rather than 89% as the legal coin. It illustrates many of the features of cast copy. The features are dull and the surface shows small bubbles left from casting bubbles. The cast forgery is about 1% smaller due shrinkage. Please left click and view image at full 600dpi resolution.
