Obverse : Young Head of Victoria to left wearing a coronet ornamented with scrolls. A fret border on left and right, broken by the legend VICTORIA QUEEN, within dot circle along periphery with raised rim. Initials of Mint C.M. incuse on the truncation of the neck.
Reverse : A Talipot palm in the center with ½ සතය in Sinhala on left, •சதம் in Thamil on right, within inner circle. • CEYLON • HALF • CENT • above, and year below in annulus within dot circle along periphery with raised rim.

Of about 52 Million half cent coins minted with 17 dates from 1870 to 1940 about 17.4 Million remain unsurrended ether lost or among coin collectors.

The weight is based upon the earlier sterling half fathing.
